On April 16th 2009, eleven year old Jaheem Herrera woke up acting strangely and did not want to go to school, but he packed his bag and went to Dunaire Elementary in DeKalb County, Georgia. When he came back from school that day, he was much happier and gave his mother his report card full of As and Bs. She gave him a high five and he went upstairs while his mother fixed dinner. A little while later his younger sister called him down to eat, but Jaheem didn’t answer. So, his mother and younger sister went upstairs to check on him and found him hanging by his belt in the closet. (CNN 1) Bullying is a horrible crime that has always affected many young people and we need to find a way to stop it. There are four kinds of bullying and they are physical, verbal, covert, and cyber. Physical bullying includes kicking, tripping, pushing, hitting and damaging property. Verbal bullying includes insults, teasing, name calling, intimidation, and homophobic or racist remarks. Covert bullying is harder to recognize because it is done behind the bullying victims back, this kind of bullying can include spreading rumors, playing cruel jokes to embarrass and humiliate, mimicking unkindly, encouraging other to socially exclude someone, or damaging someone’s social reputation or social acceptance. The last type of bullying is cyber bullying; this kind is done in the digital world and it can include harassment via a mobile phone, intentionally excluding someone from social networking spaces, or setting up an insulting personal website. (NCAB) In order to stop bullying at school, school districts now have to find a way to budget their money to afford bullying programs. The money they use is tax dollars and those tax dollars â€Å"get spent just trying to make sure that people are treated with respect. Something we all should do freely, without the imposition of consequences.† (Burns) Another thing is that teachers usually get paid by their student’s attendance and everyday 160,000 students stay home from school due to bullying. (Burns) Bullying doesn’t just happen at school because â€Å"according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety Health, there is a loss of employment amounting to $19 billion and a drop in productivity of $3 billion due to workplace bullying.† (Burns) Also, since 1999, â€Å"the Office of Violence against women has spent around $98  million in assistance to address campus sexual violence.† (Burns) I believe that verbal bullying has the most affects on the bullying victim because they will never forget what the bully said and how it made them feel and that’s what causes them to go as far as committing suicide. From a survey taken in March 2011, twenty percent of high school students say that they have seriously considered committing suicide within the last 12 months. (Burns) An example of this statistic actually coming true is Jaheem Herrera. Jaheem Herrera’s mom, Masika Bermudez, believes that bullies at Jaheem’s school pushed him over the edge. They would call him words such as â€Å"gay, ugly, and â€Å"the virgin† just because he was from the Virgin Islands.† (CNN 1) Jaheem finally got tired of it and now his mother will never get to see her son grow up. Jaheem’s school has an anti – bullying program that was â€Å"considered exemplary and includes programs to raise awareness and a specially trained liaison. Students are even asked to sign a no bullying pledge.† (CNN 1) Masika Bermudez and other parents say that they have complained about bullying as well. Another statistic says that sixty-five percent of teens are bullied each year and most believe adults can’t help them. Another example of verbal bullying is 11 year old Carl Walker – Hoover, who committed suicide by hanging himself on the stairwell banister on April 6th 2009, just 10 days before Jaheem Herrera. When Carl Walker came home from school that day he told his mom, Sirdeaner Walker – Hoover, â€Å"†¦his backpack had hit the TV stand and that the TV stand hit a girl. The girl got really upset and threatened to beat him.† (CNN 2) However, that’s not the only thing that happened, since fifth grade Carl had been having problems with other students. For example, they would call him ‘gay’ and he’d be verbally teased every day. It got to a point where Carl was so afraid of being bullied, he ate lunch with a guidance counselor. Carl’s story is also an example of sexual bullying which is really a form of sexual harassment. An example of cyber bullying is Ryan Halligan who committed suicide in 2003 also because of sexual harassment. Ryan started to get teased in fifth grade and his dad’s response was â€Å"It’s just words. You need to just ignore him†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (CNN 2) However, the maltreatment still continued up until seventh grade  when Ryan came home to tell his parents that he was becoming friends with one of his bullies. Soon later, the bully backstabbed him and spread a rumor around school that Ryan was gay and because of that, kids who didn’t normally pick on Ryan got in on the bullying. Ryan started to receive rude, wicked, and homophobic emails but he still didn’t tell his parents about them. One day Ryan went to go talk to a girl whom he had been chatting online with for a long time and the girl told Ryan that he was a loser and didn’t want anything to do with him and then laughed in his face. This is another thing that pushed Ryan over the edge.  "Cyber bullying is far more dangerous than what we had to deal with a generation ago. The level of pain that can be brought about by this behavior is unbelievable.† (CNN 2) In 2009, a survey took down what percentage of high school students have been bullied on school property by race/ ethnicity within 2008. Twenty percent of all children say they have been bullied and this survey shows exactly that. (Burns) Out of all the students at this high school, 19.9 percent report that they have been bullied. The top three races that were bullied were Caucasian at 21.6 percent, American Indian/ Alaska Native at 33.8 percent, and non Hispanic multiple race at 23.9 percent. (CDC) Bullying is a horrible crime that has always affected many young people and we need to find a way to stop it. These stories about Jaheem, Carl, and Ryan being bullied are just a few of the hundreds of thousands of bullying problems that kids, students, and even adults have to deal with everyday. To help this problem, I believe that at every school in America it should be necessary to have an anti – bullying program because according to a statistic, in a school where there are bullying programs, bullying is reduced by 50 percent. Whatever form they take, family relationships are a central feature of most of our lives (Wyse and Hawtin, 2000). The family is the basic social unity of a society. A family is made up of members and there exists a relationship between members of a family. A family plays a very important role in the life of an individual. It is for this reason that it becomes very important for people to enhance good relations with members of their family. Depending on the type of family, people in a family are related either by blood or marriage. One thing that cannot be disputed however is the fact that although family members are related family relations sometimes can be challenging as members of a family attempt to get along with each other. The following paper takes an in-depth look at the changing nature of family life and the roles and responsibilities of people within the family. As already mentioned although a family is made up of people who are close sometimes handling relationships in a family can be challenging. The saying that ‘it takes two to tango’ is very relevant in a family relationship. A single individual does not have control of family relationship solely. Every member of the family plays a role either in building or destroying family relationships. Many a times family members experience internal wrangles majorly caused by different interests by the members. During such times the best way forward is to attempt to understand one another and change is key to ensure that such wrangles are solved. Sometimes family members try to change others so that they can get along. But this is not always easy and when you realize that you cannot change the personality of another member of the family then it is always best to understand them. Yet another alterative would be to change and adjust yourself in a manner that will help you get along with other members of the family (Pryor, 2001). Family life is dynamic. This means that it keeps changing with time and the kind of change that takes place are dependent on the circumstances that surround an individual family member as years pass by. For instance the relationship that a person has with his or her parents while growing up is not the same as one grows older. During the adolescent stage there are many changes that take place both physical and emotional. It is during the adolescent age for instance that a person begins to appreciate more those outside the family especially those of the opposite sex. This is one factor that contributes to the dynaminism in nature of family relationships. Eventually a person finds that they are spending more time away from home than they used to. Relationships with one’s parents become more difficult as one keeps growing and becomes more independent than before. It is during this time that when a young person is asked something which they consider personal they get irritated and they feel that the parents are intruding on their privacy. The other factor that changes family relationships as children grow is that at some stage during growth especially during adolescence children discover some things that they didn’t know previously especially matters related to sexuality and they are not as comfortable to discuss with their parents as they would with their peers. So they prefer spending much of their time with their peers discussing the â€Å"new discoveries† and thus the close relationship with their parents is gradually and slowly eroded (Wyse and Hawtin, 2000). The expectations that parents have on their children as they grow up also contribute to dynamism in family relationships. Although parents will always have good will on their children they may unknowingly put undue pressure by demanding that they must behave in a certain manner or that they must conduct things in a particular manner which is opposed to what they (children) would want. A young person may more often than not tend to disagree with some of the beliefs, practices or the general way of doing things by their parents. This mainly happens due to generational gap. This usually leads to conflicts and changes the nature of the family life. For parents and children to have good and successful relationship respect is of utmost importance. As much as the children will want their parents to respect their freedom and independence they must also respect their parents’ views and opinions (Pryor, 2001). Having looked at some of the factors that bring about change or dynamism within the family life let us now shift or focus on the roes and responsibilities of family members. Although these two terns are used interchangeably in the practical sense they are actually different. The roles of a person basically emanates from the dictation of the society by virtues of the person being a man, a woman or a child (Morrow, 1998). For instance in many societies, the roles of a man include providing to the family and offering protection to his family while his responsibilities many include among others helping out on the difficult tasks around the homestead like fixing the fence or the bulb. For a family to exist in harmony and to strengthen their relationship the roles and responsibilities of each ember of the family must be well spelt out. This helps to ensure that no member of the family feels oppresses with work around the house while the rest are left with nothing to do. However one important thing to note is that the responsibilities should be not fixed in form of timetable. It is enough to notify family members their roles and responsibilities. This gives room for flexibility so that family members can also get to experience what other family members do. In any given family parents are always in charge and it is of paramount important that children understand this. However the best approach in parenting as recommended by psychiatrists is the one where parents do not act as dictators (Morrow, 1998). Decision making ought to be shared among all members of the family. Whenever all members re involved in decision making they feel that they are part of the family and it becomes easier to implement that decision. In conclusion, a family though made of people who are close can be difficult to manage. In Elizabethan times, everyone believed that to be a king, you had to be blessed by the Right of Kings which comes from God. The Elizabethans followed many orders, this being one of them. This is the test, which Malcolm provides in Act 4 Scene 3. This play was written for King James 1 in memory of King Edward. King Edward has powers unlimited and could cure these qualities were supposed to be inherited by the next kings to come. I believe that Malcolm had these skills (as portrayed in Act 4 Scene 3). He also was witty and sharp to think of a test for Macduff. Duncan was a righteous king he was picked by God, and whoever he picked next would be righteous too. This was Malcolm, not Macbeth. The public would have agreed with Malcolm taking the throne and not Macbeth as God had picked Duncan, and then he picked Malcolm. Another good point about Duncan and then Malcolm to become king was that everyone like them as they were worthy of becoming kings. Malcolm was worthy, until after Duncans death, he fled. This turned the public against him, but it was Macbeths fault. In that way, Duncan and Malcolm were very much alike; but they were also different from one another in other ways. Duncan was a bad decision maker, as at the start of the play, we realise that Duncan has been tricked and deceived by the Thane of Cawdor, No more that Thane of Cawdor shall deceive Our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death, And with former title greet Macbeth. This shows that Duncan was a bit gullible, and also too loyal and trusting. He made a bad decision in making Macbeth Thane of Cawdor, as the power went to his head and he became greedy and selfish. This is the main way that Malcolm and his father were different. Malcolm was much wiser than his father and used tests; like in Act 4 Scene 3 with Macduff to test peoples loyalty and to see if they were genuine or not. This worked greatly in his and his countrys favour. King Edward is mentioned in the play in Act 4 Scene 3, but we dont actually get to see him. He represents all the good things that the king is supposed to have e.g. his powers to cure, Justice, verity, temprance, stableness etc. These are the qualities that Malcolm had they symbolised that he was gong to make a great and glorious king one day, just like Edward who sets a wonderful example for Malcolm. In comparison to Macbeth, we clearly see that Malcolm is meant to be a king, and not Macbeth. Macbeth created the worse crime possible he killed the king. This shows that he has committed crimes against God and the society in his day. As God picks the future kings (as he did with Duncan and Malcolm through Duncan), as a king, you must give thanks to God, but Macbeth didnt. Malcolm would make a good king, as he possessed the qualities of thankfulness and graciousness that every king needed. Malcolm would make a fantastic king, as he had the right to the throne, given by God, and he worshipped God, for that reason. He also was a pure man and had never told a lie, (Act 4 Scene 3), The taints and blames I laid upon myself, For strangers to my nature. I am yet Unknown to woman, never was forsworn. He also has many good qualities that a normal man would not have; But I have none. The king becoming graces, As justice, verity, temprance, stableness, Bounty, perseverance, mercy, lowliness, Devotion, patience, courage, fortitude, As these are the king becoming graces, every king must possess them. Duncan possessed them and now Malcolm possesses them. All these qualities show that Malcolm has the great potential to be king and is on the peoples side being picked by God. He was like his father, who was a brilliant king and who everyone adored, only better. Therefore, in conclusion, according to all the evidence that I have presented, I think that Malcolm would make a great monarch. He has all the skills and necessary qualities to be a good ruler. Comparing him to the two past kings. He is better than both of them and would lead Scotland to victory after what Macbeth had done to it.
